Why Warm Water Aquatic Therapy?
In an ideal therapeutic temperature of 87 to 94 degrees Fahrenheit, aquatic therapy, administered by a licensed physical therapist is a treatment modality that may be a beneficial adjunct to a comprehensive treatment program. It may be recommended for those with mild to severe developmental disability, recovering from an injury or surgery, post traumatic brain injury or stroke or having difficulty or pain with movement on dry land/against gravity. It provides multiple physical and psychological benefits. The various properties include buoyancy, which can be used for assistance and/or resistance; hydrostatic pressure, which provides benefits for the cardiovascular system, the pulmonary system and the renal system(essentially facilitating these systems to become stronger and more efficient); hydrodynamic forces and specific gravity, which provide a safe environment to work on challenging balance and strength tasks that may not be achievable on land The water will assist in improving range of motion, strength, endurance, and overall function. Improvements in all of these areas, specifically in respiratory endurance, circulation and postural control may result in a healthier, stronger person.
As stated in Hydrotherapy: Principles and Practice (Campion 1997), “The ability to be independent in the water, to achieve skills that may be difficult or impossible on land, can only have favorable and lasting psychological effects, which boost confidence and morale, and these may well be carried over into life on land.” For those with severely limited to no mobility, increased muscle tone and weak immune systems, the warm aquatic environment is a very appropriate and possibly the most beneficial treatment environment.
